Don't Be a Dinosaur
Maybe I live in a protective bubble, but I have been fortunate
not to have experienced ageism directly. Of course, this is
due primarily to the fact that I mostly hang out with other
baby boomers! In places where I encounter younger people
on a regular basis, such as my Toastmasters Club, I think my
vibrancy and oomph is loud and clear. Everyone, young and
old, always comments on my enthusiasm, and I’ve been
surprised at the people who “get me” without stereotyping
who are much younger. I think I’ve stumbled onto an
important key—to eradicate the old Old, we’ve got to go out
there and be ourselves all the way in this new Bold. It tickles
me that I’m mentoring an 18-year-old blooming writer in her
first novel for her high school senior project. We have a ball
together and have a frank, free communications flow. I’m
positive she doesn’t think I’m an old fogey. Wish I had
known more “older” people like me when I was young!
