Auntie Joyce

Auntie Joyce is always there
leaping off airplanes in a single bound
to squeeze up little nieces
and ruffle nephew hair

Auntie Joyce is long-awaited
girlfriends’ kids send interim love notes
with cherry tree illustrations

Sage of the seven-year-old set
recipient of questions
about bosoms, sex, and dinosaurs
Auntie Joyce always has
a candy bar in her purse
or a glass jar
brimming with gumballs
direct from The Cannery, San Francisco

song in her heart
an oldie but goodie
just the right birthday gift
and just the right answer

Auntie Joyce knows everything
there is to know about kids
except how to mate one her own.
